Ruby McBrien stuns field with first career victory
It was a race of tire wear and attrition at Charlotte Motor Speedway, but under the difficult driving conditions, one starlet stunned everyone. Ruby McBrien, who had failed to register a top 20 finish in her first three starts in 2017, managed to beat the odds, passing fellow rookie Casey Lester for the win with just two laps to go to take the victory.
The last two laps were not smooth, however. In turns 3 and 4 on the final lap, McBrien collided with lap car William Carmichael, losing a lot of momentum. This opened the door for Ryan Matthews to steal the win, but McBrien had just enough steam, beating Matthews by 0.06 seconds at the line.
Ruby McBrien is the first rookie who has locked her way into the STARS LIS Chase.
"I'm... I... I did it! I really did it!" said a very teary Ruby McBrien, "I'm so happy right now!!! Every has been congratulating me!!! My friend Ben [Atkins] even promised me a whole box of Skittles!!! Dad is smiling, my sister is smiling... this is the good day Ruby has been waiting for, and I'm so so happy."
"My spotter told me I needed to go to victory lane," said Frank McBrien, father of Ruby, "I was pissed off about what happened with the 05 so I made a joke about them going off the running a few laps ago, but Mario, my spotter, told me 'No man, your daughter just won the race' and I just started laughing. I could not believe it. I am... indescribably proud of Ruby. I'm not really a man of many emotions, but this might just be one of the happiest moments of my life."
Many drivers came to congratulate McBrien in what proved to be a very popular victory, including Bradley Carlisle and Evie Vance, her teammates, as well as ATK Motorsports driver Ben Atkins, who spent a good amount of time at McBrien Racing when Ruby was younger.
"I watched Ruby grow up. She was 8 when I joined McBrien Racing." said Atkins, "and I am just... in shock. This is great. I'm so proud of her. She's such a kind and gentle girl, and I love her to bits. When I saw she won the race, I couldn't stop smiling. The crowd were going crazy. I think everyone loves that she won this race."
McBrien went from 40th to 17th in points with her victory, and is now fourth seed in the chase.
