Father defeats daughter as McBriens finish 1-2 in wreck-filled race

It was a day to remember for Frank McBrien, as he punched his ticket into the Round of 12 with a victory in an crash filled race at Chicagoland Speedway. The McBrien's were swapping the lead every few laps, but ultimately the experience of the older McBrien was enough to secure him the victory.

Frank and Ruby McBrien were able to outpace Mac Hanley and Ryan Matthews, who were with them in the last few laps, but unable to make a run, while Breyton Green and Elliott Jenkins were 3 seconds behind, and also the last cars on the lead lap.

Notable incidents during the race included a flip in turn 2 for Connor Swift, as well as a monstrous accident exiting turn 4, where Joey Clagett was turned head-on into the wall, resulting in his Ford going on its roof, while Matilda Dillinger spun into the pack of cars approaching, sending her car for a side-over-side tumble as well. Many were critical of Dillinger after the accident, as she had hooked Clagett forcing a four-wide move, setting off the accident.

The cars dwindled down, and despite contact between the #11 and #29 cars avoiding the aforementioned turn 4 accident, the McBriens battled for victory, with Ruby leading the way coming to two laps to go. Frank McBrien managed to pull a crossover move coming to the white flag, however, and Ruby McBrien's car was not strong enough to mount another charge.

Frank McBrien, despite being proud of his victory, was apologetic at first to his daughter.

"I've gotta say sorry to my little baby Ruby firstly. I think I messed up her car when he got together. She did a hell of a job getting up there with a damaged car. I thought she had me for a moment. I was real proud. I got to race my little girl for a win and that's a dream of mine."

"She might actually be the toughest opposition I've ever had for a race win, in more than one way. I'm always rooting for her and I wanted her to win just as much as I wanted to win myself, but I can't give away race wins when my career is over in eight weeks. I know she'll understand, and I'm sure she'll race her way to the next round no matter what."

Ruby McBrien was elated for her father, however, and the gentle teenager held no grudges over the contact.

"It happens. I'm not mad." said Ruby McBrien, "I got to see Dad win again, and that's always good! I'm always happy to see Dad win. The car didn't drive great after we hit but it's okay. We got a chance to win so I can't be mad!"

While the youngest McBrien didn't lose her cool about the incident, one driver who did was her teammate Evie Vance, who suffered mechanical woes for the second week in a row.

"I'm not saying I'm getting the bad cars but I did announce I was leaving the team recently" said Vance, "We need to win LORP now and short tracks haven't been my thing so far this year. It's going to be a struggle."

"Well let me make it clear, the #1 has joined the #6 on the list of people that won't be winning the title this year," said Ben Atkins, equally as dissatisfied after the race, "It was early in the race and she just wiped out a ton of cars. She knows better than that, but after seeing the sort of person she's become this year, I'm not concerned."

Bradley Carlisle and Frank McBrien are locked into the next round on wins, while the other 14 drivers are left to fight it out on points, with Ben Atkins and Evie Vance both needing a win to advance.
