2018 SEASON - Empire State 450 Qualifying and New York Duels
Dia McBrien Takes Pole For Empire State 450
Dia McBrien becomes the second daughter of Frank McBrien to set STARS history as she locked herself into the Empire State 450 in her first attempt by notching the pole for the event. McBrien was joined by ATK Motorsports driver Grant Macintosh on the front row, as Macintosh also clenched his place in the Empire State 450.
Dia McBrien, the older sister of reigning champion Ruby, recently won the Chili Bowl in the her first attempt, and will be looking to repeat the feat in the biggest race on the STARS calendar.
"I knew we had a good car in qualifying trim," said McBrien, "but I didn't think it was a polesitting car! I think we had a bit of fortune on our side with the wind but honestly I expected nothing less out of the team as well! They're all great workers and this pole position is for them!"
McBrien will lead the field down to the green flag in the first duel, joined by teammates Bradley Carlisle and her sister, Ruby McBrien, who start third and sixth respectively, while Macintosh has the support of all of his teammates in the second duel, as Evie Vance will start second, Atkins third, Leckliter fifth while Caitlin Conway will round out the field after engine issues marred her qualifying run.

- Duel 1:
- Hanley Dominates as Big Names Fail to Qualify
It was an unexpected winner of the first duel, as Mac Hanley battled his way from 12th on the grid to earn the lead within five laps, and never look back as he put on a dominating performance, leading 36 of the 44 laps en route to victory. Hanley, who will be full time in the series for the first time since 2015 with Jenkins Performance, held off a charge from Ruby McBrien and Maki Nishikino, as the pack broke up as the race went on.
The race ended under caution as Hanley's teammate and team owner, Elliott Jenkins, blew a tire with just three laps to go, slamming into the turn 2 wall hard, meaning Jenkins will be omitted from the event for the second year in a row.
Another notable driver to not qualify was 1995 champion Tom Delgado, in his home race, as the veteran suffered a piston failure just 7 laps shy of the finish. Due to the low attrition race, and the retirement of Kevin Miller on lap 9, this meant Delgado would not be in the big race.
Gregory Hadaway finished 21st, and was the third driver to miss the event.
- Duel 2:
- Tense Finish Sees Houston On Top
Another surprise awaited in the second duel as Last 2 First Racing driver Dustin Houston was the first across the line to take home the win in the second qualifying duel. The second duel saw closer racing than the first, with 27 lead changes in 44 laps, compared to just 5 in the first race, and with the top 12 finishing within one and a half seconds. On top of that, this race also was the cleaner of the two, with the entire event ran under green flag conditions.
Fellow Truck graduate Dallas Hammond finished second while Gabriel Macena, Matilda Dillinger and fellow Last 2 First Driver William Carmichael rounding out the top 5.
Everyone in the field also made the finish, with exception to Caitlin Conway, who's engine expired with only 4 laps to go, and Bradley Stansfield, who also pulled off just one lap later. Stansfield still made the event on his qualifying speed, while teammates Dalton Johnson and Steve Peterson were forced to go home, despite making it to the end of the race.
