Changes to Points System Announced
Wednesday December 7th, 2016
An entirely new points system will come to the Lowes’ STARS International Series as a new playoff system was introduced for the series. The premise is “win and you’re in.” The first 20 races of the schedule are dedicated to earning your way into the playoffs, which will consist of the final 10 races, where 16 drivers will fight for the championship.
The more races a driver wins, the better, as wins will be worth points in the playoffs, which will help early on in a drivers bid to win the championship. The points system will remain the same as before, with 50 points being awards to the winner, then 40 points to 2nd, with the gap going down by 1 point all the way to last, who will earn 2 points.
If more than 16 drivers win in the first 20 races of the season, the drivers with the most wins will be first to make the cut, then it will go off points for the drivers with 1 win. If less than 16 drivers win, then the remaining playoff seeds will be based by points.
The champion will be the driver from the 16 who has the most points at the end of the playoffs.
Rookie of the Year proceedings will look a little bit different for 2017 as well, as it will now entirely be based off of average finish, instead of its own points system.
